Applicants use the personal statement to express their individual rationale for a career in surgery. Our research explores common topics and gender differences within the personal statements of general surgery applicants. Methods We analyzed the electronic residency application service personal statements of applicants containing 3,82, words from Liaison Committee on Medical Education-accredited medical schools to a single ACGME-accredited general surgery program using an automated textual analysis program to identify common topics and gender differences.
Using a recursive algorithm, the program identified common words and clusters, grouping them into topic classes, which are internally validated. Results We identified and labeled 8 statistically significant topic classes through independent review: Conclusions Applying textual analysis to a national cohort, we identified common narrative topics in the personal statements of aspiring general surgeons, noting differences between the statements of men and women.
Women were more likely to discuss surgery as a team endeavor while men were more likely to focus on the details of their surgical experiences. Our work mirrors what has been found in social psychology research on gender-based differences in how men and women communicate their career goals and aspirations in other competitive professional situations. Nearby, Xavier’s baby sister, Quinn, plays with their father, Anthony Byrd, The anthology is rooted in her experience of moving to the United States in from her native India to begin a surgical residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Not only was John one of just a small number of female surgical residents, she also had to adjust to a foreign culture. She was desperate to find role models who could share their own stories of triumphing over obstacles.
Unfortunately, female mentors were few and far between. According to a report by the American College of Surgeons, there were 28, female surgeons in the U. That’s a small but significant increase from the 23, female surgeons in the U. There’s a reason — actually, several reasons — why female doctors traditionally have stayed away from surgery, John said.
Surgery is physically rigorous and can require doctors to stand on their feet for as much as 24 hours at a time. In addition, surgical residencies tend to last for either five or six years, while other residencies may require three years. And the residency schedule is notoriously brutal; in , the workweek was limited to a “mere” 80 hours.

I have a strong interest in global health and working with undeserved populations, which is part of what drew me to New Mexico along with the beautiful outdoors, friendly and down-to-earth people, and unbeatable weather.
In my free time, I enjoy painting, hiking, Latin dance, travel, and new and interesting foods and people. I was born and raised in Albuquerque, but I lived in Georgia and Texas before coming back to New Mexico for medical school.
When I was finishing my fifth year of studies as clinical psychology doctoral student, I fell in love with a second-year medical resident; a wanderer at heart with the softest smile and a way of listening that made me feel like the whole world stopped when I spoke.
Envision trying to treat that severe pain with acute opioid therapy aAOT but that with each sequential dose escalation, your attempts remain futile because naloxone is blocking the AOT from combining at the site of action, the mu-2 opioid receptors. Make no mistake; in this case, the adjuvant therapeutic options regional nerve blocks, IV acetaminophen and ibuprofen, pregabalin, SNRIs, etc. If a patient has a scheduled or elective surgery with an active prescription for any buprenorphine product, the approach is not too difficult, but it requires an understanding of pharmacology, rational polypharmacy, but most importantly, common sense.
If the patient arrives on site in an emergency situation with an active prescription for any buprenorphine, the approach is a bit more challenging compared to elective surgery. How then did Reckitt Benckiser ever convince the FDA that this is a necessary or safer combination compared to buprenorphine alone? I would sure like to know the answer to that looming question if anybody can enlighten me. Jones shares a diagram that is ironically referenced to the eminent Suboxone manufacturer, Reckitt Benckiser.
It actually illustrates how and why buprenorphine is more tightly bound to the mu-1 receptor compared to naloxone. But even then, the reversal is short-lived. The stronger the stimulation, the more pronounced will be the opioid effects of pain relief, feelings of well-being, respiratory depression, and so on. Heroin, classified as a full receptor agonist stimulator , nearly fills the activity zone.
It is a popular misconception that the term “woman” is etymologically connected to “womb”. The Venus symbol also represented femininity , and in ancient alchemy stood for copper. Alchemists constructed the symbol from a circle representing spirit above an equilateral cross representing matter. The word woman can be used generally, to mean any female human, or specifically, to mean an adult female human as contrasted with girl. The word girl originally meant “young person of either sex” in English; it was only around the beginning of the 16th century that it came to mean specifically a female child.
In particular, previously common terms such as office girl are no longer widely used.

Many residents have obtained their own funding through various research grant and scholarship programs. Mentoring Program Mentoring is essential for the development of our surgical residents. The five-year general surgery residency: A look back at surgical training in the U. Halsted announced his new tenets of surgery resident training at the turn of the 20th century, his ideas were mostly influenced by the authoritarian and hierarchical German system of surgical instruction. An intense and comprehensive training experience in a pyramidal system emphasized a close and dependent relationship between the surgical mentor and the trainee.
Despite training that could last for many years, graduation was uncertain. Although this system did produce remarkable individual master surgeons, it did not ensure that all surgical trainees had a generalizable and standardized educational experience. For decades, it was accepted that the rigorous five-year training program encompassing more than hours per week of bedside and operative experience would adequately prepare surgical residents for independent practice and ensure a consistent stream of highly qualified surgeons.
The exceptionally high standards and demanding training, however, took their toll on surgical residents, and many medical school graduates began to lose interest in surgery in the s, culminating in unfilled surgery slots in the national resident matching program in the early s. With the introduction of work-hour restrictions, substantial limitations in resident autonomy, and the decline in the number of traditional, open surgical procedures, the adequacy of the five-year residency model has come into question.
When Mattar and colleagues surveyed fellowship program directors in about their experience with recent graduates from surgical residencies, a total of 91 responded and the results were dismal. Furthermore, the failure rate on the ABS certifying exam has increased by more than 50 percent over the last 10 years, and 80 percent of graduating residents now pursue fellowships after residency, presumably a result of trainees feeling inadequately prepared for independent practice after completion of residency.
Response rates are often low and may introduce bias—frequently toward residents in university programs and those individuals with either excellent or very poor experiences.
